Tên laniakea có nghĩa là "thiên đường rộng bao la" trong tiếng Hawaii, từ lani, nghĩa là "thiên đường", và ākea, nghĩa là "rộng bao la". Tên được đề xuất bởi Nawa'a Napoleon, một giáo sư Ngôn ngữ học tại Hawaii ở Đại học Capiolani Community. Tên này cũng nhằm để tôn vinh các nhà hàng hải Polynesia, người đã sử dụng kiến thức về thiên đàng để điều hướng Thái Bình Dương.[3][8]
